Cracks in a Beveridge home: reading them properly
Width, pattern and what else is moving tell you whether a crack matters.
In short: Not every crack is a defect, and not every defect looks dramatic. Measuring is what separates them.
Start with the width
Cracks are categorised by width in the tolerances guide. Hairline cracks are common; wider cracks need a cause.
Brickwork at fixing
On a Beveridge build we recorded moderate brickwork cracking consistent with Category 3 damage, well before anyone had moved in.
Look for company
Doors that bind, windows that stick and floors out of level often travel with structural cracking.
Concrete
Driveway and slab cracking often follows missing or too few control joints rather than structural failure.
